sociology
My name is Maya Wilson, and I am a graduate of Baltimore City College who is now pursuing a major in sociology at the University of Pittsburgh. I was born and raised in Baltimore and always sought to learn and experience new things. With this attitude, I was able to excel in my school and my community. My hard work began to pay off in the most needed way my senior year of high school when I started the college application process. College is extremely expensive, but financial help from the Girl Friends Scholars and other donors has made the need for me to attend college without financially killing my parents possible. I am super excited to begin my college career, though I am extremely nervous. It has not quite hit me that I will be gone from my family and friends for such a long time- it probably won't until the day of my departure. I am eager to meet new friends, and try my hobbies like theatre and community service in a new environment. I am so extremely grateful to the Girl Friends Fund for the financial and moral support. It feels so reassuring to have other African American female peers and mentors as inspiration. Again, thank you for this award and opportunity.

Hello,
My name is Timia Harris and I just graduated from the Columbus East High School as valedictorian. I will be attending North Carolina A&T State University this fall majoring in Industrial Engineer with a minor in Business Management. The reason I chose these majors are because math has always been my favorite subject and I always wanted to be my own boss. Futhermore, Industrial Engineering requires a lot of teamwork, which is something I adore because I enjoying learning from a group. In high school, I served in several committees, organizations, clubs and sports teams. Just to name a few I played volleyball, softball and did cheerleading. I also was on the Mock Trial team, where I played as two witnesses. I was also inducted into the National Honors Society and I won the Most Outstanding Calculus Student award. Outside of school, I did lots of community service. I helped out at the Ronald McDonald House, raked leaves at the Greenwood Lake Camp in Delaware, Ohio and I participated in several food drives. I also was on the Red Cross Committee at my school. Other programs I was associated with are Upward Bound and Xinos. Xinos is a high school sorority that allows high school students to have the opportunity to join competitions and network. While in Xinos, I was the treasurer my first year and the president my last year. In addition I won first place in the National Midwest Regions Math Competition. As for Upward Bound, I was the treasurer there as well. Aside from academics, one of my main passions are helping others. I love seeing people happy and if there is anything I can do to help I am more than welcome to do so. Helping people is not a complicated task for me, I feel blessed just to have the opportunity to help someone.

University of Pennsylvania
Sociology
For the Fall 2010 school year I’ll be a rising sophomore at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. During my freshman year, I explored a variety of campus organizations while also juggling two part-time jobs.
I became a committee member of the University’s Black Student League, joined the Arabic Language Club, and was a member of the Politics and Cultural Pluralism Program at W.E.B. Dubois College House. Towards the end of the academic year, the Onyx Honor Society awarded me a certificate of academic achievement.
Additionally I was involved in UPenn’s Community School Student Partnership Program. Through this organization I tutored students in reading and served as a mentor to students at recess and lunch at two West Philadelphia public elementary schools. I also volunteered at a local high school, assisting students and teachers in the classroom. Through my position as both a tutor and a mentor, I gained valuable exposure to many of the challenges facing inner city schools and urban communities. For the upcoming school year I am looking forward to joining UPenn’s Race Dialogue Project and conducting research with professors in the Sociology and Urban Studies departments.
When I started at UPenn, I planned on majoring in International Relations with a minor in Modern Middle East studies. I am still very passionate about global humanitarian crises and bettering relations between the United States and the Middle East; however, I have also become increasingly more interested in improving education at both the national and international level. I aim to use my experience in the West Philadelphia Public School System as a foundation for my research in examining how U.S. and global educational policies can help decrease the disparities between the wealthy and the impoverished. I am leaning towards a major in sociology with a concentration in urban sociology and a minor in urban education. I plan on beginning research and further study into educational reform

Hello,
It goes without saying how much the support of the Girl Friends Inc. has helped my academic career. As a young girl born to Haitian immigrants in the U.S I was always told of things I couldn't do or how out of place I was. I am now happy to say that I have found my place. I am now happy to show everyone the woman I have become and how far I can continue to go. After being accepted to seven major universities, including the likes of Georgetown, I have settled myself upon Emory University in Atlanta, GA. Here I will branch out into the far corners of knowledge I never saw in Miami. Here I will diversify myself and cement my name into their history, your history, and world history.

International Business
Monique Fortune is a junior, International Business major at Howard University who believes that while on your way to the top, never forget to reach back and bring someone else up with you. She is the second of four daughters. Even though Monique grew up in one of Philadelphia’s poorest neighborhoods, her mother always found something for her and her sisters to do to keep them off the streets. Whether it was dance or acting classes, after-school programs or church ministries, camp or other summer activities, she was always doing something. While at times Monique and her sisters weren’t able to do some of the things the other children in their neighborhood were doing, she knows now that being involved in these different activities paid off. These activities not only fostered her personal growth as a young woman, but helped her realize her potential in the global community as well.
Monique sees there is a need for young people to be exposed to life other than his or her own neighborhood. There are numerous wonderful opportunities to grab hold of and countless places to see. Most times, there are so many talented young boys and girls who just need a little inner and outer motivation to help them to step into their purpose in life. Monique believes it is her duty to give back to her community. Just as someone helped her to realize her potential, Monique strives to help others realize their inner and outer beauty as well as their God given brains and talents.

Sociology
I am the proud recipient of the 2011 Juanita Humphrey Scholarship. As a freshman at Washington State University (WSU) in Pullman, WA, I am very exciting about beginning my studies. My field of interest is sociology, and taking Sociology 101 has been a class that I really enjoy. I will continue to work hard as a full time student and I plan on being involved within my school community. Thus far, I have attended Black Student Union meetings (BSU) and plan on becoming engaged in their activities. I have also recently tried out for the WSU club volleyball, making a spot on the team. I am looking forward to everything is in store for the 2011/2012 school year, and I will do nothing but succeed.
